Jasmine Slomp was born and raised in Lethbridge and decided to continue her education at the University of Lethbridge where she graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. Led by her interest in human movement and helping professions, she began her education in Prosthetics and Orthotics at BCIT, graduating again with distinction in 2016. She started her career with Lethbridge Orthotics in 2015 in her summer breaks and has continued there through her additional Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Science from McMaster University and her 2018 certification as an Orthotist through Orthotics Prosthetics Canada.
All of Jasmine’s patients can feel her passion for patient care and she is currently fulfilling her career dreams by specializing in pediatrics. Outside of Lethbridge Orthotics, she loves hiking, weight-training, anything to do with physical activity and exercise, and most importantly, her Labradoodle, Jax.
My name is Jasmine and I am a Certified Orthotist.
Question: How long have you worked at Lethbridge Orthotic-Prosthetic Services for?
I have been at Lethbridge Orthotics since 2015. Um I started part time. They were kind enough to take me on as a summer intern in between my two years of graduate school. And then I've been here full time since 2016.
Question: Why did you choose this career?
I chose Orthotics because I always knew that I wanted to work with people sort of in health care. Um I learned very quickly that I didn't want to work in primary health care and so I started exploring allied health care fields. And I was doing a practicum placement in Physiotherapy, which I did not love, and I stumbled across the field of orthotics and sort of got curious about where these braces came from and who was making them and uh sort of everything involved. And did a little bit of research and stumbled across the program at BCIT, applied and the rest is kind of history.
Question: What is your favourite part of your job?
My favourite part about my job is definitely the Pediatrics. Um I love to see the kids; puts a smile on my face every day, every single one of them that I get to see. So I could do that all day long if I could. But generally it's just being able to make a difference in people's lives. Being able to see that what you did has made up an impact on their life and helped to improve their quality of life somehow.
Question: What are some fun facts about yourself?
Fun facts about me. There are not that many fun facts about me. I enjoy my work. I am a very active person so I like to do a lot of different things. I do some weight lifting, yoga, running. I'll pretty much try anything physically active if it's out there. I love my dog, he's my best friend. We hang out, we walk every day. Um spend a lot of time with my family
